FULL-LENGTH DOCUMENTARY - IN PRODUCTION

Niu Forever invites you into the heart of Hawai'i, where the coconut tree embodies resilience, food sovereignty, and cultural reawakening. See how communities come together to protect genetic diversity, combat invasive species, and find healing through their deep connection to land and each other.

AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY

The grassroots movement "Niu Now" is on a mission to restore the "niu," or coconut, as a fundamental food crop on O'ahu, Hawai'i and spread the Indigenous wisdom of "aloha 'āina:" loving land and serving people.

ALEX CANTATORE

FILMMAKER

Hi! I’m Alex Cantatore. I am a mission-driven filmmaker & videographer working primarily in environmental conservation. I believe our path forward as a species must prioritize restoring our relationship with land, and I use my camera to tell stories about that.

I work primarily in the documentary medium because I think, in general, stories are best told by the people they’re about. But I make some other fun things too! See below for yourself. Everything on this page was directed, shot, and edited by me.

DOCUMENTARY

tree stories

In his hometown of Milwaukee, WI, a retired urban forester with a penchant for seeking unusual trees discovers an ancient American Elm that miraculously survived the Dutch Elm blight of the mid-20th century, which killed nearly 100,000 trees in Milwaukee alone.

The citizens of Calhoun County, FL band together in the aftermath of 2018’s Hurricane Michael, which devastated timber farms and threatened the economic bedrock of their community.
